South Island scenery at a slow pace — lake mornings, one big fiord day, and a Wānaka cabin to do nothing in. Base in Queenstown, then decamp to its calmer sibling.

The 7-day New Zealand itinerary, day by day
Day 01 · Queenstown
Land by the lake
Lake Wakatipu
Settle lakefront and a gentle first evening walk along the water.
Fergburger
The famous burger if the queue's reasonable (before noon or after 9pm), then an early night.
Day 02 · Queenstown
The fiord day
Milford Sound
A full 12–13 hour coach + cruise day (5–6h each way, 1.5–2h cruise) from ~NZD $159. Do NOT treat it as a half-day — the single most spectacular thing on the island.
Day 03 · Queenstown
Slow Queenstown
Skyline Gondola
Up Bob's Peak for the lake-and-Remarkables view (~NZD $78 with luge), or a lakeside lie-in.
Arrowtown
Drive to the historic gold-rush village, or a Gibbston Valley winery.
Amisfield
The slow-trip splurge — the 'Trust the Chef' set menu near Arrowtown, one of the South Island's great meals.
Day 04 · Queenstown
Lake day
TSS Earnslaw
A cruise on the vintage steamship, a lakeside walk, or genuinely nothing.
Botswana Butchery
Last Queenstown dinner — the riverside steakhouse.
Transfer · day 4 → 552 km apart
Day 05 · Wānaka
Settle into the quiet
#ThatWanakaTree
Wānaka is Queenstown's calmer sibling. A lakefront walk to the famous tree, a long lunch, a cabin afternoon. Dinner down a laneway at Federal Diner or shared plates at Kika.
Day 06 · Wānaka
One walk, then float
Roys Peak Track
If you're fit (16km, 5–7h, the iconic ridge viewpoint) — or a gentler lakeshore walk. Note: closed Oct 1–Nov 10 for lambing.
Day 07 · Wānaka
Last morning
Lake Wānaka
A final lakeside coffee, then drive back to Queenstown for the flight out.
